"Poor hiding" means that after the waterborne wood coating has been applied and dried, the solid topcoat fails to cover the primer. Why do these issues occur? Are they due to the waterborne coating itself or the application process? HILHELM Waterborne Paint believes that missing area or poor hiding in waterborne wood coating applications are generally caused by the following reasons, and provides solutions for reference. Cause Analysis 1 Incorrect proportioning of the coating, such as too low pigment content or poor pigment hiding power. Solution: Increase the pigment amount in the waterborne wood coating to enhance hiding power. Cause Analysis 2 Insufficient stirring before use, causing settled pigment not to be fully mixed or uneven distribution. Solution: Ensure the waterborne wood coating is stirred thoroughly before application. Simple shaking is not enough. Generally, use an electric stirrer for at least 3 minutes, or stir with a wooden stick for 5–10 minutes, or pour back and forth between two containers 2–3 times. If application stops for more than 2 hours, stir again. A well-mixed coating should have no sedimentation, no color difference, no resin floating on top, and should flow in a continuous stream when poured. Cause Analysis 3 Improper surface preparation of the substrate, mainly applicable to clear coating on wood. Solution: Before applying waterborne wood coating, remove oil stains, dust, etc. from the wood surface. This ensures good adhesion and a smooth, flat paint film. Cause Analysis 4 Excessive dilution of the waterborne wood coating, resulting in low application viscosity. Solution: Add 0–10% water as needed for application, but do not add too much water. Cause Analysis 5 Applying the coating too thin; only one coat of topcoat when using different colors of primer and topcoat, with missed areas; or uneven film thickness due to uneven substrate surfaces. Solution: Follow the correct sequence for waterborne wood coating application and ensure uniform film thickness. Choose the proper application process according to the wood product characteristics to avoid missing areas or uneven coverage. Cause Analysis 6 Excessive contrast between primer and topcoat colors, e.g., applying a light-colored topcoat over a dark-colored primer. Solution: The color difference between primer and topcoat should not be too great. Cause Analysis 7 Over-sanding, penetrating through the paint film. Solution: Apply wood filler first, then sand gently, slowly, and with even pressure. Sand only until the surface is smooth, and avoid sanding through the film. Follow HILHELM Waterborne Paint Keeping pace with the world, pursuing environmental protection, energy saving, nature, and health. HILHELM Waterborne Paint – ultra-low VOC, passes EU EN71-3 heavy metal testing; excellent adhesion, yellowing resistance, and strong hiding power; flexible and full-bodied paint film, long-lasting; self-developed, complete product range suitable for various application techniques.

Nippon Paint Reinforces Market Leadership On February 5, Nippon Paint Malaysia unveiled the “Re:Think.Re:Create.Expo" at its 12,000 sq ft Shah Alam facility to solidify its position as the decorative paints market leader. With the industry growing organically at 5% annually, Managing Director Yaw Seng Heng emphasized innovation as a crucial strategy. The expo, exclusively for professionals, showcases paint applications across diverse surfaces including walls, metals, glass, and flooring, pushing boundaries toward creative and sustainable solutions. Samurai Paint Shatters Perceptions in Automotive Coatings Between February 6-8, Samurai Paint executed Asia’s largest automotive aerosol spraying challenge in Kuala Lumpur, earning dual recognition from Asia Records and ASEAN Records. The event achieved the “Highest Number of Full-Body Car Spray Paints Using Aerosol in a Single Event" by successfully respraying 30 complete car bodies over three days. In a deliberate strategic move, Samurai Paint exclusively engaged DIY enthusiasts rather than professional painters. CEO Ian Ong Yoke En stated the initiative challenges the long-standing dominance of compressor-dependent workshops. Leveraging proprietary 2K aerosol technology, the patented Aero Gun, and Tintatek colour-matching, the company demonstrated that professional-grade, bodyshop-quality finishes are achievable outside traditional environments. Demonstrating environmental commitment, the company planted 30 trees at Sireh Park, Iskandar Puteri, symbolizing each vehicle resprayed. Ong confirmed the challenge will become an annual event, establishing a long-term legacy for aerosol innovation in Malaysia. Market Context These micro-level initiatives coincide with broader Asian market dynamics. Consulting firm Orr & Boss reports Southeast Asia is emerging as a critical growth engine as the Chinese market contracts, with regional players investing heavily in accessibility and sustainability to capture shifting demand. As Central Europe's second-largest coatings producer, the country is leveraging its strategic position to become a regional hub for sustainable manufacturing. Market Growth and Investments The Polish coatings industry is projected to reach €2.8 billion by end-2025, with 4.5% year-on-year growth. Key player Śnieżka Group recently expanded its eco-friendly production lines, allocating €20 million to water-based and powder coatings. PPG and AkzoNobel have increased their Polish manufacturing capacities to serve growing demand from German and Scandinavian markets. Sustainability Initiatives With EU Reach and CLP regulations tightening, Polish producers are accelerating green transitions: Bio-based innovations: Farbenia's new resin plant uses rapeseed oil and pine tar as feedstocks, reducing carbon footprint by 35% Circular economy: Syntos SA's recycled packaging initiative eliminates 3,000 tons/year of plastic waste Energy efficiency: Berger Paints' Wrocław plant runs on 100% renewable energy since Q1 2025 Technology Adoption Digitalization is reshaping the sector: AI color matching: Śnieżka's ColorAI platform reduces pigment waste by 22% IoT production: PPG's Łódź plant uses sensors for real-time VOC monitoring, ensuring compliance with EU Air Quality Directive Construction Sector Demand Poland's construction boom fuels coatings demand, particularly: Thermal insulation coatings: 40% growth due to building renovation grants Low-VOC wood coatings: 30% increase from furniture exports to Germany Challenges and Outlook Raw material volatility and skilled labor shortages remain concerns. However, Poland's cost competitiveness and proximity to Western markets position it for continued growth. The industry focuses on R&D collaborations with Kraków University of Technology and Gdańsk Tech to develop nano-enhanced antifouling and photocatalytic coatings.
